Types of happiness and unhappiness.
I theorize at any given time, these are the two modes of happiness you could end up in:
1) The happiness that comes from contentment where you are so grateful for what you have and don’t want anything else. The nothing.
2) The happiness that comes from “feeling driven”, the chase, the pursuit, the hunt. The doing.
The key to remember is that both are intentional. They are not accidental. They require high mental energy!
You have to find a moment, stop your usual train of negative thoughts, exert energy in steering that train toward self-reflection and self-awareness to fully viscerally “immerse yourself” in gratitude to feel the 1st mode.
The same way you have to stop your negative train of thought, exert energy in making small achievable goals and working really hard at them to fully viscerally “immerse yourself” in action to feel the 2nd mode.
What you want to avoid is the opposite states:
The unhappiness that stems from NOT being in the contentment mode
The unhappiness that stems from NOT being in the action/driven mode
The unhappiness is a result of not guarding your mind and slipping away into the “low mental energy” zone. This zone shuts down any effort and plays the negativity in a tape. This is far more dangerous than anything out there including failure. Failure means you are trying. Low mental energy makes you not even try.
So, here’s a handy tip:
If you are feeling unhappy, exert energy to make a list of things you have going in your favor and be grateful (content happiness).
Or make a list of things you would like to achieve and keep knocking them out, one tiny little step at a time (action happiness).
